To me I think the witches are in the play because it was set in the old ages when witches were around and because to make the the story more scary because they are evil. In the modern version film of Macbeth it shows the witches working undercover as nurses in the hospital so that they could get a heart of a man so they could do a ritual to find Macbeth I think.

I like the idea that modern interpretations of the play would still involve some sort of gruesome undertaking.
